Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April in 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother. She grew up as an only child. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. There, Scott worked two jobs while she was studying secondary education. She hoped she would become an English High School teacher. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying her goal of becoming a high-school English teacher came to a halt. She started her career performing live poems and the work of her own. In the end, she teamed up together with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. At an Roots performance, she made her debut to be an artist. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained more experience on stage as she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was the first signing artist to label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
